After rounds of protracted negotiations, the United States and Russia have agreed on a cessation of hostilities in war torn Syria.
The ceasefire includes the Syrian government led by Bashir Al-Assad and backed by the Russian government as well the groups fighting to topple his regime most notably the Free Syrian army backed by America.
The new deal will come into effect on February 27, 2016 but would exclude al-Nusra front, the Islamic group and other groups considered as terrorist groups.
There is little optimism for the ceasefire which has been agreed because a previous agreement on cessation of hostilities failed. However, the US Secretary of State remained upbeat as he said: “I am gratified to see the final arrangements concluded today for a cessation of hostilities in Syria and call on all parties to accept and fully comply with its terms. If implemented and adhered to, this cessation will not only lead to a decline in violence, but also continue to expand the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian supplies to besieged areas and support a political transition to a government that is responsive to the desires of the Syrian people”.
The agreement will be directly monitored and enforced by America and Russia.
