American retailer stops the sale of hover boards on its website

Target, one of the largest retail chains in the U.S., has decided to “pause” the sale of hoverboards on its website.

The action is being taken in the wake of a notice from the U.S. government last week that declared all hoverboards unsafe.

“We have paused the sale of hoverboards on Target.com,” a Target spokesperson told Mashable. ??”We take product safety very seriously at Target and are proactively working with our vendors to ensure they are compliant with the new safety standards and hoverboard certification protocolprovided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.”

The move on Target’s part only affects the online operations of the company, the brick and mortar store outlets never, according to Target, offered hoverboards for sale to walk-in customers.

A search for the Swagway hoverboard on the Target website now returns a page that reads shipping “not available.”

In addition to halting the sales of hoverboards, the company is also offering to accept returns.

“Guests who have purchased a Swagway or Razor Hoverboard from Target.com and are at all concerned about product safety may return the item in store or online,” Target’s spokesperson said.

This is just the second major retailer in the last few days to halt the sale of hoverboards following the government’s safety warning.

On Saturday, Mashable reported that Toys “R” Us opted to halt the sale of hoverboards “out of an abundance of caution,” as it works to put the Razor Hovertrax hoverboard “against the latest safety standards.”
