Mike Okiro, the chairman of the commission, who disclosed this on Thursday, August 14, said in spite of this, there had not been recruitment into the force within the period.
According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he said: “In the last two years, the police lost 12,000 personnel as at the last count. By this time next year, if we don’t recruit, the possibility of police providing adequate internal security will be called to question.’’
Okiro said that when he assumed office as chairman of the commission, in June 2013 his request to the government to recruit men into the force was turned down, especially as the election was coming up in 2015.
In the memo, he said: “I recommended 1,000 officers from every state and 500 from the FCT making it 36,500. The number of police personnel is dwindling daily in terms of strength.”
